You want it? – Make it!

Turkey Hunting is very special to me. During the pandemic I, like may others, pithed ideas of how I could pass the time. Yearning to get out of the house, my fiancé and I tossed around a few activities that would get us outside. Long story short, a childhood dream of hunting took the cake for us both.

After we took our time researching, training, and practicing , we headed out for the first time in the Spring of 2021. With a Mazda CX3 packed to the brim, we headed out on our 6 hour drive from Seattle to Kettle Falls. Can you say excited? We heard birds and we scared birds… Though we didn’t come home with any turkeys we came home pumped up for more action.

Fast forward to Fall of 2021, we went out again and were thrilled to both bag our very first birds.

Unfortunately, a local stray dog nabbed EVERYTHING but a foot (including the fans) we left out overnight.

This past spring we made it out to Colville, WA for another go. My fiancé, took a shot at a beautiful bird on public land and asked if I would #3dprint a custom mount for him.

First he shared his vision. Then I sketched out a design. I came up with a modular mounting fixture that would sit flush on the wall with an adjustable fan clamp to keep everything secure. Next I set up the beard. The beard was bound in leather and fit perfectly into the suspension hole I designed in the mount. For the front plate, he wanted Washington state to commemorate the hunt. Finally, I added a few personal touches. I included the season, year, and turkey tracks to mark the location in Eastern Washington where he took his bird.

Once he was happy with the design it was time to pick out the colors and materials. I went with PLA for the front plate because they had the best variety of colors to choose from. I was not concerned with strength or durability as the fan was being supported by an ABS mount. The plate and mount were joined by press fit magnets.

A lot of my creations are born from not finding what I want online or instore. There are a lot of commemorative Turkey Hunt Mounts out there to honor your hunt.

    When a store-bought mount doesn’t cut it,  #makeyourown!

    Love, To Infinity and Beyond!

Schawand McMillan approached me a few weeks ago about creating a piece for the couple’s party she was attending. The theme was love, couples, and tie-dye – how could I say no to that?

    Consultation

We met briefly over Google Meet to discuss her concept. Shawanda provided me a few images she had found online of love symbols.

The vision was a business card-sized piece with a magnet in the back. Similar to the Fire Dancer pieces that I made for Alicia & Clayton’s Wedding in thickness with an inset magnet for hanging.

    Models

I got to work playing with SVGs and existing STL models.

I used Inkscape to convert Images that Schawanda provided into SVGs that I used to create Sketches in FreeCAD.

    I found a few STLs from cult3d.com and thingierse.com.

After running a few test prints, Shawana settled on “Infinite Love” by funkTLS.

    Drafting

    Below is the final draft.

I couldn’t help but use my favorite Prusament PLA in Ms.Pink for the test prints. The pint came out beautifully! I was able to scale the middle down to about 100mm X 50 mm X 5 mm / about the size of a business card. The 6×2 mm magnets I had on hand press fit seamlessly into the back of the print without any additional glue.

Just what my client was looking for, with crisp lettering, even at the small scale, she loved the piece.

    Filament

Once we settled on a model, it was time to discuss the colors. I went over my library of color options and material properties per the application and recommended PLA filament.

    Did I mention TIE-DYE???

With the theme in mind, it was a no-brainer to opt for the Rainbow filament. I showed Schawand the filament in an application I used for my own desk and it was a wrap.

I used the filament previously for my own desk organizer project.

    Final Product

    Love it!

The colors are what really made this piece shine. DO3D Silky PLA Filament is just awesome. The pieces were shiny and the colors were vibrant.

Each piece was finished off with a matching ribbon and modes makes tags featuring our signature, butterflies on the back.

This project was an absolute blast to work on. The total project took less than 4 weeks, including shipping.

The pieces arrived next day to Chicago Illinois, with a few extra treats inside the box. modest makes can ship anywhere in the world.

  • Can you do me a favor?

Can you do me a favor?

Early this past spring, a couple approached a couple to incorporate their love of music into a wedding favor for their wedding guests.

It all started with a Reddit post the couple saw featuring the iconic Dave Mathews Band Fire Dancer posed as a 3D figurine.

    r/DMB - Fire Dancer 3D Print
    https://www.reddit.com/r/DMB/comments/jjsapn/fire_dancer_3d_print/

We had a brief phone consultation about their visions, 3D printing, and options. After that, I drafted a few figurines over the next two weeks. I quickly realized my desktop printer limitations with respect to the model details and my printer build volume. With about 10 failed attempts I stopped and pivoted direction on the piece.

I knew I could build flat, clean, and fast. At our next appointment, I showed the couple what I could do and settled on a more realistic option for their favors which I could better customize and make their own as a functional wedding favor that would adequately represent them.

The second iteration was a hit! The couple loved the personalization and adored the honeycomb infill. They were additionally impressed with the magnet and hanging versatility. In fact, they wanted to know if there was an option for a larger centerpiece. Of course, I couldn’t say no to a challenge.

I found the Macro FCCircularText to help me out. This macro wrap stings into circular patterns and orientations, including circumferential and helical, clocks, and angled rings. This helped add the couple’s initials and wedding date to the ornament with ease. I added a bow for the final touches and the result was fantastic. The piece really commemorated their special day and allowed for guests to keep the ornament as a hanging piece using the ribbon tied around the top or on the fridge by using the magnet in the back.

With a few more tweaks, the couple was in love! They decided on four colors, purple, orange, red, and blue to capture the “fire” of the fire dancer. I went with translucent PETG 1.75 mm from amazon for each color. They all worked really well with the Prusa PETG settings in the PRUSA Slicer.

My printer settings included a 0.6 mm nozzle, 0.20 mm DETAIL print setting, Prusa PETG filament, 20% infill, no brim, no supports, smooth build plate, no glue or tape, at 2 pieces / build. Each build consumed about 8.25 meters of filament or about 25 grams for a total build time of about 2 hours. I finished off the ornaments with a sharp Exacto knife, precision tweezers, and a lighter to singe the stringy bits.

Voilà! here is the finished product! Each piece was finished off with a sheer satin sinch bag for each of the wedding guests to take home.

    Wedding Season

I had the privilege of working with an awesome couple to design and produce wedding favors for their wedding reception.

We worked on incorporating their tastes into a lovely wedding favor that included personal touches to commemorate their special day.

    Bride and Groom

    Things They Love

    • Eachother
    • Family
    • Friends
    • Dave Mathews Band

    Final Product

    Centerpiece

Very special Take home for the bride and Groom to commemorate their special day. Include their full names and full wedding date.

    Guest Favors

Translucent Orange, Dark Blue, Purple, and Red round out a beautiful splash of color to express the couple’s gratitude to close friends and family who could share their special day with them.

Echoing a smaller version of their centerpiece, Alicia and Clayton ordered 50 favors. Each including a magnet press fit into the back, a delicate white ribbon for optional hanging, and a white organza sinch bag to close.

Special thanks to the Bride and Groom!
I cannot thank you enough for this wonderful opportunity to create for you.
